Carving Lithophanes with V bit

Post by IYWD »

I haven't carved any lithophanes for a while and, when I did, I used a ballnose bit. I know I seen a post a while back that gave detailed instructions for doing them with a V bit but I can't seem to find that post. :? Can someone who knows where it's at please post a link to it for me?
Thank you!

I don't know where the link is . but all you do is tell the software you are using ball nose at 0.03 I cut to a depth of 0.21 in .25 corian ... just make sure to leave 0.04 this is the whitest portion of the lithophane.

so settings are Ball nose 0.03 @ 8-10 % stepover (actually use the Vbit I like 30 degree bit)
I raster at 315 degrees this starts the litho at x0,y0
depth of cut 0.21 to do this depth it is best to start at run at a 45 degree angle
so only the very first cut is utilizing the full bit the rest of the cuts
you are shaving at your stepover ..

I use the same procedure when the photo is larger but I then use tapered 0.0625 bit and if not much detail can use 0.125 same settings.

good luck be sure to post your lithophane so we can all see it

found a link with tutorial with the settings in it

also one in Aspire http://www.vectric.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=12871

Thank you very much for the information!
Has anyone carved text in a lithophane? If so, do you also carve the text .21 deep? I want to carve the photo and have text and a Maltese Cross next to it.
Thanks again!

Text will work fine but better with larger bit ie at least a 1/16th .. if you like
you can email me you project will work up in Aspire to get a rendering as to what it would look like ...

calgrdnr ISP is sbcglobal.net

The best lithophanes are made by setting zero=Z at the bottom of the part on a table that has been planed with your router to make it perfectly flat. Set the gap below model to 0.031, limit model height to less than 0.14. I use a 0.1625 ball nose, 3-flute, spiral bit in one pass in 1/4" Corian. I have cut as many as 35 lithophanes with the same bit that cost less than $9. Check the link below to see my table setup. Here is my latest lithophane. Check my other posts for more lithophane info.
