Milling away excessive colour?
Have anybody tried to set the surface z-zero point to 0.2mm and that way tried to remove the excessive colour with an end mill in order to get a better result than you get with sanding?

I would think you'd get swirl tool marks that would also need to be sanded. When I spray the letter or carvings color after final overall finish coat, I take a paper towel stretched over a flat block and wipe the surface as clean as possible. Minimal sanding then required to clean the surface. I then give the job a final clear coat.
