Terrain Topped Box

Post by TomWS »

Inspired by: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=39222&p=285336&hili ... in#p285336
I decided to convert a terrain project I was working on into a box as it seemed much more functional than some 'wall art'. So, here is my terrain box, which will be a birthday present for a friend of mine.

I won't tell you what area this is so I can let @scottp55 take a first stab at it. :)

Terrain Map is carved Corian, sides are Ambrosia Maple, and bottom and liner are Mahogany.
Enjoy.

Looks like the head of Penobscot Bay Tom :)
Rockland to Verona Island(?), and then basically Belfast to Castine.
(can't forget the islands Islesboro to the North, and then the Vinalhavens)
(OH...considered Northern end of Mid-Coast Maine, USA)

What topo software did you use Tom??
It looks pretty detailed:)
I've learned my lesson well. You can't please everyone,so you have to please yourself

Bingo! I consider it a success that you recognized it! :)

I found a great site, https://jthatch.com/Terrain2STL/ where you can zoom in to an area and then change your window size. The UI is a bit awkward, but worth the effort. I tried some other sites/methods that used GIS data, but the water areas had too many seams and it didn't look good.
The elevation is exaggerated so that the islands are more visible. You can easily make out Camden & Belfast Harbors (two requirements for me), Lincolnville shore (where the Isleboro ferry port is). North limit is the mouth of Penobscot river at Sandy point. South is just south of Owl's Head.
NICE BOX!! :)
Thank you! I'm glad you like it.

I knew that it wasn't where I live. No snow. :D

I love the concept of using these topo carvings for something utilitarian. Tks for the idea. Well done!
