Gonna be a Zank Inlay Christmas at my house...

Post by laflippin »

Thought I'd share some of the Zank V-carve inlay projects I've been working on to get ready for Christmas this year (yeah, yeah I know it's not yet even November, but time mysteriously begins to accelerate within a month or two of the yule season).

Wow...beautiful inlay work! I love the bowl with the shell design, but they are all exceptional.

Thanks very much for the kindness, folks...and I will share a secret: Don't know whether there is a provable correlation, but my blood pressure has gone down by 15 - 20 points over the past couple of years of messing around with Zank inlay. (I also retired from my day job 1 1/2 years ago, so that may have been a contributing factor  ....).

Scott, the wood used in the snail/flower tray: Tray body is redwood, flower twigs and snail shell are walnut, snail body is green poplar (fingers are crossed, hoping that it remains green for awhile), flower blossoms are padauk.

Thanks Lee:)
Looks like Ocooch(Ian?) did a good job saving out the "Green" Poplar for you! :)
Kinda putzing around Node Editing an "Owl in Dead Pine" pic for a possible "Paul" VInlay because of you. :D :D
Definitely backburner for trying a 30* Engraving bit on at some point...REALLY would like to emulate that first pic style sometime this Winter when other projects are done.

Funny...Trying to node edit this Owl is Raising My BP.....(Gotta train my critters to sit pretty on simpler trees:) :)

That is a nice pic of your neighborhood owl, Scott--is it a Great Horned?? I assume you are intending to simplify the pine tree a bit? I downloaded your photo and if you don't mind I'll play around with combo of Photoshop/Adobe Illustrator to see what comes out of it.

Randall, The Thoth Tray is a long story...I'm no Egyptian mythology expert but years ago my son and I were having a few laughs listening to the notorious Fugs' recording of an exorcism of the Pentagon (Out demons, out!) and Ed Sanders was chanting a litany of mystical commands for this rite including, "...by the Beak of Thoth". So, we looked into Thoth's pedigree back then and he's since become kind of a part of the family lore. The kid's an adult now but I think the Tray of Thoth will tickle some funny old memories on Christmas morning.

Yep..A Great Horned Owl,and feel free to use him if you want.
Only slightly simplified...really want as detailed as I can get for first VInlay in years.
No real graphic experience at all...not even Inkscape in a couple years.

That is a great story that adds to the character of the piece.
