I went with a textured metallic finish from a rattle can to simulate metal and was very pleased with the rough metal look texture.
The one thing I would do different is have a crank on both sides rather than just one side.

Another Steampunk desk lamp
Made from Fred Nelson plans. Material is ¼” (5) ply Aircraft Grade plywood.
