Plaque

Post by rgerding »

I was asked to make a marker for a deceased fireman to be placed under a newly planted tree at the local firehouse. I was given a picture of a badge and developed the image from various images from the internet. I added the lettering inside the badge using Vcarve Desktop. The material Is Corian.

I use acrylic paint and then use a spar urethane to overcoat.

It looks really nice. Curious... I never worked with Corian yet, but on the acrylic paint... I assume that you hand painted the carved letters and then sanded off the excess? Did it come off easily? I asked this because wood tends to bleed a little even if you shellac it. The smaller the letter, the harder it is to clean up. Corian might be different.. I don't know. And Corian is just basically countertop material, right?

There is no bleeding with Corian which makes for very fine detail. It sands very easily giving you the fine detail. It is countertop material and comes in 1/2" pieces. I got some scrap pieces from a local contractor. It can be sawed and routed just like wood. You would really enjoy using Corian. Thanks for your interest.

What a nice job with the plaque you created using the solid surface material (corian)
I have been working with it also for the past couple of years. It is easy to work with,
and for me it is easier to work with than wood. It also inlays very nicely with sharp
lines on the pockets using the v bit inlay techniques. I really like the way your painting
methods came out.
Very nice job, and I look forward to your future posts.

Wonderful design and completed project. I can see why they asked you to make the memorial piece.
