Vectric and VCarve Pro are just the best!
I saw this hand turned bowl on Instructables https://www.instructables.com/id/Cracke ... llishment/ and it looked really cool. But I can't turn, nor carve; so I thought, "maybe I can make it on the CNC."
Low and behold, I find Beki's video on using Clip art to create bowls in Vcarve that is exactly what I needed. I imported the cracked earth jpg and created vectors. Used "project toolpath onto 3D model" to follow the curve and cut the "cracks" using a 45degree V bit. Other bits were 1/4" end mill and 1/4" ball nose.
I finished with Shellac and colored the cracks with some craft acrylic paint.
It came out well enough on the scrap Fir, that I'm going to try it on some "real" wood.

Frankly? Honestly? No punches pulled?
That pine bowl looks better than the one that inspired you. Nice work, now I have to add that to my list.

Re: Cracked Earth bowl
Thank you all for the kind comments.
I've made a second bowl out of Lyptus https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyptus, a hybrid that looks like Mahogany.
There was a lot of tearout in the roughing pass, so I stopped and switched to a 1/4" down-cut end mill -- it helped a little. Didn't add color to the "cracks" this time; they seem to stand out well enough without it. Shellac topcoat is too glossy, so I'll need to sand it down a little.
Overall size is 7-1/2" x 1-7/8" high. Inner bowl is 3-1/2"diam x 7/8"deep.
Thank you Beki & Vectric for the great How To video
