Edge Lit to Infinity

Post by Mobius »

I've been dying to try something like this for a long time, and after several iterations I have mostly succeeded.

Behold the edge lit engraving infinity mirror!

Looks better in person, it's so hard to take photos of these things.

What do you mean by mostly? Where you hoping or expecting something a bit different?

Looks good to me.

Yes taking pictures is a problem for me as well lol

I made one a few years ago as an experiment, was going to be the start of more but never got that far

By mostly I mean that for me, nothing is ever 100% finished. There is always room for improvement, or modification. In this case, this was a test run for another upcoming project. There are several things I'd like to change before starting it.

For example, I'd like there to be more depth to the image. Easily done, just need to space the engraved mirror further from the tinted front acrylic. I'm limited by keeping this at 0.75" thickness, but I still have a few options.

I also don't like the amount of light bleed on the edges, but I've already got several other ideas on how to remedy that.

I'm also going to see what happens when I use limo tint vs. mirror tint, as I'd like the 'mirror' to be black when off to completely hide the image behind. Right now, you can see a ghosting of the image when the LEDs are not on.

Thanks for the compliment though! I can picture a whole host of neat things I could do with this idea. Very exciting.

On which side of which mirror is the engraving? I'v made some edge lit mirrored clocks and one from infinity (and beyond) seems like an interesting challenge.

I used a 2mm acrylic mirror, and engraved in reverse on the back through the mirrored finish. In a previous iteration I tried engraving the front part of the mirror, but that creates a double image effect that I didn't like. Instead of something like this: ||||||| off to infinity, you get: || || || || ||
