Savannahdan, yes, the pen was made by me on my lathe, it was made from stabilized mahogany.
What I did wrong with the magnet holes was that I calculated the size wrong. The hole should have been 8mm wide and 2,5 mm deep, they came out to small and to narrow. I have now learned, thanks to Adrian, how to do proper conversions from mm to inches.
Forstner drill bits are now on my wish list, thanks for the tip.

Thank you mickecarlsson for posting the finished box!!!

Looks great and your inlay on the top looks perfect, Well done!

Yes, those magnets can be a bit tricky... I too had a bit of an interesting struggle getting them in there... didn't help I used a metal screw to hold them while I tried to get them in the hole with the "super glue" (made no sense, and in the end resorted to a bit of wood... would have been a smarter choice in the beginning).

Again... thanks for sharing!!!

Not yet.
I don't have a problem with the male engraving location, but when I try to locate the same text for the female engraving I get lost as to what to use as a starting reference point. :?:

Ok, Gene8522 let's see if we can get you sorted.

I lucked out seeing as the plane and jet stream were in the center of the layout and when flipped (bottom to top) it looks the same... so it just works. If we were to add a bit of text, like you are trying to do, then it gets a bit more complicated, or at least harder on the head to get right. Once you get it "the first time" then the process will be easy the next time.

Let's assume you are going to add the text "Vectric" to the box top in the center as an inlay.

The female part (recess) will be reading as you would expect... left to right and right side up. On the other hand, the male side would be left to right, but upside down. That one I think you get pretty easy... but if the bit you want to inlay is off-center then that can see a lot different.

To help illustrate this let's do the following:

- Open the "Plane and Jet Stream.crv" - Place your text where you feel it should be if you were looking at the finished top (Image 1.jpg - attached) - This will be the female side.

- Now convert the job to a 2-sided job by going to your job setup and selecting the "Double-sided" option and making sure we are flipping "Bottom to Top" (Image 2.jpg - attached)

- Don't worry about recalculating the tooling, we won't be cutting anything with this.

- Select the text you have added and right click on it, choose "Copy To Other Side". Nothing should change in your 2D view at this point.

- Now flip to the other side (Image 3.jpg)

- The location of the text is the proper location for the male part (Image 4.jpg)

As I mentioned that is just an illustration of how it should work/look.

I have a feeling that is what you are doing but when it comes to copying the text location from the "Pencil Box - Take Flight.crv" getting it to line up in the "Plane and Jet Stream.crv" is not easy to line up.

Let's work out a way to locate your text in the right position after the copy. If what we did above makes sense then let's close it... no need to save it and then do the following:

- Open the "Pencil Box - Take Flight.crv" and then flip to the bottom side.

- Place your text where you like it in reference to the plane and jet stream.

- Select the text, the jet stream and jet. Copy that to the clipboard (Ctrl+C)

- Open the "Plane and Jet Stream.crv"

- Once it is open and you are looking at the 2D view paster in the vectors you copied (Ctrl+V)

- Don't be surprised if they don't line up because they won't.

- Having all 3 things selected nudge the vectors so the plane and jet stream overlap each other.

- If done correctly or as close as you can the next step will work.

- Having the text selected press "Shift+V". This will move the text over the centerline.... BINGO... it should be in the right place.

Let me know if that helps...

Hi Todd,
Thanks for all your work on this.
Here's what I tried, I'm going to try a test cut today to see how well it works.
First I drew a box around the text I wanted and made sure that the text was centered inside the box. Then located the text on the 'male side' with the text upside down reading left to right.
Next I copied the plane, jet stream and text in the box and pasted them to the "Pencil Box - Take Flight.crv". And put them on a new layer with a new color.
Then I flipped the text over and made sure to recenter the text inside the box.
Next I mover the plane, jet steam and the text over the plane and jet stream and made sure they overlap each other.
Then in the layer for the imported text I deleted the plane, jet stream and box, leaving just the text.
Then I 'Calculated' the "V-Carve - Plane and Line" making sure to select the plane, jet stream and text.
I think this will work....... :)

Hi Todd. I really liked your pencil box. Needing a Bday gift for my sister, I thought this would be perfect.

Here's a few pics of my box for her...

Box: maple
Branch: walnut
Flowers: cherry
Flower Centers: osage orange

I hid the magnets under a thin (.7mm) cherry plug. Still plenty strong to hold together.

Thanks for sharing the file.

Very delicate, and a sort of Oriental feel to it:)
When I get back into VInlays...That's the kind of project I want to try :)
Congrats!
(LIKE the saying too:)
