Free Labs Project - Pencil Box - Take Flight

This month’s project is inspired by my late father whom was almost never seen without his journal, mechanical pencil and stick eraser. Always the same ones and he took pleasure in always knowing where they were. I try to do the same and carry my favorites back and forth to the office. I enjoy the ritual of taking them out of my bag and putting them on my desk. The simple beauty of a device that has the power to make a change, to turn an idea into something I can share and reminds me of my father is, well, something that is hard to put into words.

Of course, a basic pencil box would do the trick, but I wanted it to be more useful, something that adds to my daily routine and maybe, just maybe, helps to tell a very small but special part of my fathers story.

The inlay on the top and the inclusion of the v-carving is another nod to my father. We both shared an interest in flight and without his support in my life choices, teaching me to keep my fears in check I would not be where I am today.

The addition of the mobile phone slot took care of a desk organization problem I have been having. It creates a place to put my mobile while it’s charging so I don’t have to keep looking for it.

Hope you download this free project and make it as is or... "Make it your own."

Thank you for the project plans. Also appreciate you sharing the story about your father. My oldest daughter will appreciate me making her one these pencil boxes. I gave her a Tombow mechanical pencil last year which would go very nicely in one of these boxes will maybe a little adjustment.

Hi Todd,
Thanks for posting this project. I have a question. I would like to add an inlaid name into the top, but I'm having trouble getting the two half's to line-up. Do you have any advice or tricks to get the male and female parts to mate?

Hi Todd,
I would like to make these boxes for my two granddaughters but with their names on each.
I guess I just don't know how to ask my question. Right now I'm just trying to get the inlays to look right in Aspire 9.5.
I don't have a problem with the female engraving location, but when I try to locate the same text for the male engraving I get lost as to what to use as a starting reference point.

Where or how would I locate the text on the box top?

After more thinking. This should be the proper orientation for the text on the male carving.

Thank you for a very nice project.
I, after some struggle with inches/mm, did manage to cut the project.
Material is teak, with pine as inlay. It is a gift to our CEO.
Unfortunately i had som struggle with the magnets, but the end result is stunning.
Thanks gain.

mickecarlsson, The inlay looks very nice and I really like your choice of woods. For tough cuts, such as the pockets for the magnets, I'll may have the cnc make a dimple where the pocket is to be and then use a forstner drill bit to drill the pocket. Also, I may use metal discs opposite magnets sort of like kitchen cabinet magnetic holds. Thank you for posting and you've given me more ideas for when I cut one of these. Did you make the pen?
