Shelter 2.0

Postby Bill_Young » Wed Nov 21, 2018 8:42 pm

Hi all,

Wanted to post some pictures of a 8'x8' Shelter 2.0 design that was cut by Zach Owen's students at Andover School in New York. They downloaded the VCarve files that were especially encoded to allow cutting with the trial version...many thanks to the Vectric folks for all the support...and cut it on their ShopBot Buddy The finished Shelter was donated to Peace Village, a tent city in Rochester NY and delivered in the snow!

Thanks Micheal!

Not only were the files toolpathed in VCarve Pro and made available in .crv format, but the design was done in VCarve Pro as well. VCarve Pro from start to finish!

That's really neat and a great way to address the need for quick housing. I like the way the cuts are on the outside to accommodate the corrugated roofing. Plenty of room for insulation. Are those plans proprietary or are they available for other communities to use? Thank you for sharing.

Shelter 2.0 is an Open design and licensed under a Creative Commons Non Commercial license. We've had enough questions abut it that we include this clarification of our "expectations", but Creative Commons is the legal license:

The original Shelter 2.0 files are licensed with a Creative Commons license and they will continue with that license, but we've had enough interesting requests that we thought it would be easier with the newer versions to put down our expectations when you use the Shelter 2.0 files and designs.

*) You can use these files for your own personal use, free of charge.

*) You can use these files to make a Shelter to give away, free of charge

*) You CAN NOT use these files commercially for a Shelter that you will sell or charge for, with these exceptions

**) You can charge enough for a Shelter to cover direct material and fabrication costs. We know how hard fund raising is and encourage projects to be sustainable.

**) You can sell or rent finished shelters IF any money collected is used for a "good cause". You can figure out what that means...donating the money to support a local homeless shelter is a "good cause" but paying for your trip to Vegas isn't. All we ask is that you contact us first with your plan and we'll be happy to give you the OK.

If you use these files, please let us know and give Shelter 2.0 credit. It's not that we're needy and crave praise, but feedback helps us know how the project is doing.

Please don't host these files yourself...it's a struggle to keep things up to date as is, and much harder if they are scattered all around. If you do make a change or think of a better way to do something, please let us know.

We don't claim to be clever enough to have though of all the possibilities, so if you have an idea that doesn't fit anywhere in here, just send us an email at info@shelter20.com and explain what you have in mind. Our interest is in having Shelters built, so we're pretty agreeable.

Thank you. We've had tiny homes built for homeless and these might be a good fit. I'll show them to others more involved. Thank you.

It may be poor form to post about a fund raising campaign, but we've just started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to send 20 of the 8'x8' Shelters from VA to CA for fire relief. We would greatly appreciate y'all sharing this with your social networks.

And if you're a West Coast Vectrician, or anywhere really, we would love to help you get started in cutting Shelters locally. As of last week over 10,000 homes had been burned!
