Swan in Marble
Carving marble
I've been wanting to try carving marble. Can you give some details on what you did? Type of bit, cutting rpm, feed rate etc.? Thanks
Phil

This particular piece was cut with the following settings:
PC router at 13,000 (I'd like to run slower but the PC loses too much torque at 10,000)
Feed and plunge rates of 0.1 ips -- I have gone as fast as 1ips on other pieces of stone. I'm sure I could have used faster feed rates if I had a better hold down system at the time. Back then I screwed down scrap wood around the marble to hold it in place. I'm using vacuum pods more these days.
Bit:
I used the default settings for stepover and stepdown from the vcarve wizard tool database for the 1/2" 90 degree bit. I used a Sears craftsman 1/2" V90. Now I'm inclined to use a CMT 3/4" V90 or 1/2" V60. I use a Gerber 1.25" V120 for some applications but haven't tried it with stone yet.
Cooling:
I held a shop vacuum nozzle near the bit which kept lots of air moving. The bit and collet were warm but not hot at the end of the run.
Software:
Regarding the vcarve wizard software, I'm pleased. It has been good to use. It also landed us our first paying job and now well over 3/4 of our work is based on v-carve capabilities.
