3D Carve for Granddaughter

Post by hardidon »

Carved out of Poplar. Finished with amber shellac after burning some highlights with a torch.

Well done Don!! :)
I too LIKE the concept when I saw it last night, but was brain burned from tiny 1.1" 3D test cuts for a 10 month olds children's block set.
Not fully caffeine-ated today, but was it made with a boundary box, then copying and shifting up the next 2 times in the model, and cutting "selected vectors"?
Feeling particularly dense...but could come in real handy for me with thick, but narrow hardwood stock I have where my option was limited to going Tiny.
Appreciate any help you can give!
She'll LOVE it! :D

No, this was a model that i bought off of the internet. Running Desktop, so i don’t have capability of 3D.

Thanks Don!! :)
Fairly sure we can do it with VCP 8.5 (including Desktop)up though with any model.
Ya got my 3 remaining brain cells working on the best/easiest way to do it :)
Sure hope it's not a hair puller....got few enough of those left! :D
LOVE playing with my mini Blazer and Fire:)
GOOD job!

Don,
Really like the design. Thought I'd give it a try with the clipart horse.

Thanks Don :)
Would have been a little easier if customer didn't tell Dad after they were finished, that she wanted the Maple Maine's and Anchors with the "Toasted" finish that I gave him as a concept key fob that he had in his pocket that day.
Thank goodness it was an oil finish, and I hadn't overdone the espresso the day I touched them up with the mini Blazer torch.
Bubbled a bit, but never actually started on fire:)
Those DARN Camden people are FUSSY! :D :D
I like playing with my big 1.25" head flame propane torch too (with a brush flame dialed in) :)
If you toast the Maple JUST enough to be black, BUT before carbon rubs off on your fingers...it can be an interesting effect.

I've been meaning to highlight like you did, but never seem to get a 3D big enough, AND looks like it would improve it YET. :)
scott

Been playing with blocks today John, and haven't tried it.
How did you do it?
I like Don's better, but I imagine with a little putzing...we can do it:)
Were any Aspire tools absolutely needed?
Thanks John

Hey Scott,

Took about 10 minutes, didn't spend a lot of time "tweaking" it, just wanted to try out the concept.

I used my old VCP 8.5, drew an 8x10 square, created a 1/4" offset and duplicated both two more times. Brought in the horse clipart, played with the size and angle, duplicated the horse and started messing with the position of the horses and tilt of the models to put the back horse in front of the first one. Played with the offset of the three squares to soot.

Created a roughing and finishing toolpath for the components using the inside square of each picture frame as the bounding vectors.

Created a profile toolpath to cutout the frames using the outside squares.

Like I said it was just a quick and dirty try to see how it would come out.

Thanks John for giving me a good starting point!!
Wasn't sure you would after the Camden dig :D
Down and Dirty is just fine for concepts:)
I like threads that give me ideas!! :D
Thanks again for posting Don!
scott

Got a Leopard on a ledge model where his paw rests ON the frame, and some narrow/thick Birdseye that wants to be a Leopard:)
This idea may be perfect:)

Hi Don, great job.
How big is the carving, how long did it take you and how deep did you carve the horses?.

regards

John, That is some nice work! There are times when i think that i would like to upgrade to Aspire and do some 3d work, but then i go and download the trial version and take a picture that a grandson has said that he would like to have done, and i stare at it and wonder what am i supposed to do???? Translating a picture to 3d in my mind is just not computing.

Brian,
Each panel is 12" tall and about 7 3/4" wide. Each panel took about 2 to 3 hours with a roughing pass with a 1/4" end mill, a finish pass with a 3/16 ball nose, followed up with another finish pass with a 5.4degree tapered ball nose (0.0625" diameter)
