Test cut in plywood. Eventually I will do this in solid wood. I haven't decided if it with be V-Carved with glazing, V-inlay, or V-carve with resin fill.
A friend made the drawing on the back of a calendar page. I asked her if I could try doing it as a wood carving and she graciously granted permission.

I vote for V inlay. It will be beautiful.
Good judgement comes from experience.

Who is your friend?
I've had a copy of that drawing for years...I collect anything tiger related, and this has been all over the internet for many years.
Here's my copy...
It clearly shows the iStock photo watermark across the image.

Re: Work in progress: Tiger
When I run tests for this type of carvings I usually use cheap pine board and paint the surface of the board with black paint. It tends to show exactly what is being cut and it stands out better visually. Then After I am satisfied with the results I will create several small size carvings created on a piece of the final product board material for stain vs carving visibility tests. Then after I find the right combination I will create the full size product carving on the final material board.
I usually only have to do this once on a certain type of material board because I save the labelled small test pieces to use as visual template references for future projects.
Here is an example of an eagle carving
It is time consuming but the end results are what matters the most!!!

Had Bob Ricard visit my shop 2 years ago from NY, and always remembered his take on a "Tiger".
Art Nouveau is a big part of his work, and he was playing with it.
Can't remember the substrate, but you can see Dad admiring the tiger in the second pic:)
Just thought I'd toss it in the mix Randall, as it made an impression on us

I've learned my lesson well. You can't please everyone,so you have to please yourself
