When I saw folding wood for the first time I was amazed. The principle is not new and many people have made numerous variations on the basic straight line cuts, creating amazing patterns!
But <Snijlab Delft> was the first (for so far I know) to make a practical use of the straight line pattern.
BUT there design was created for a laser cutting machine!
BUMMER!
So I thought "Why not make this on my CNC machine??" (They allow changes under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License)
A laserbeam typically has a width of 0.20 mm (0.0079") so that's too small for a CNC machine to use on 4mm (5/32") plywood.
But I figured this principal of making slots will also work with the smallest end mill I have now: 0.8mm (1/32")
This is the result:
There are these changes I made to the original design:
1. Obviously the first change was to adjust the line pattern for CNC machining meaning placing the lines further apart because the end mill is 4 times wider than the laser beam.
2. A pencil holder...
This was so much fun making it... The design took me 5 minutes. I was not sure how to draw the sawtooth pattern to get a better grip on the pencil.
But the smart snap function proved to be the help I needed so the sawtooth pattern was done in 10 seconds. The grip is perfect also after extended use!
3. The original clamp 'mechanism' design from Snijlab seem perfect but after dropping the notepad, it fell apart, broken off at the 'hinge'
So I changed it but not did test it.
4. rubber band slot position
The rubber band slot were placed more to the middle of the pad.
I positioned them at the edges of the notepad so you could put the rubber band under the carton backside so hold it in place and the 90 degree angled slot prevents the rubber band coming lose when you pull on it to open the lid.

NOTE: TO GET THE BEST RESULT be sure to mill the hinge from BOTTOM TO TOP so in the ORDER tab change this setting...

Another note: Be sure to adjust the size of the pencil clamp holes to the thickness of the wood used!

VERY cool! That is really creative! Thanks for sharing it - will add it to my evergrowing list of things to try

Thanks you all!
Such a notepad makes a great gift because you won't find it in any shop...
it also works very good with ACRYLIC!
Maybe best to use cast acrylic, not extruded.
