I wanted to make an heirloom piece for my first grandchild. Found plans for a simple blanket chest, but he can use it for a toy box too. Wood is white oak from a tree that fell in a storm. I had it quartersawn and I planed it into some of the prettiest wood I have ever used.
Three raised panels in front were routed with 3-D clipart downloaded from Design and Make. Each of the three panels represents Land, Sea, and Air. His name and birthday are inlaid inside the lid with purpleheart. Soft-close lid stays for safety work great.
This is my first project with cnc router. V-carve software was very easy to use after learning from their on-line tutorials. Each panel took about 7 hours of machine time using a 1/16" (.0625) roundover bit and 10% step-off each pass (0.006"). Very little sanding needed. BTW, I highly recommend the rough-cut pass to remove majority of wood first before the finish cut pass. It doesn't speed up the final cutting pass, but the router and 1/16" bit appreciate it. Inlay was with a 90 deg v-bit.
I can't wait for more grandchildren!

Yes, and very good comments too:dah79 wrote:Very nice work, especially for a first project!!

Your comment about roughing is also very relevant: it is possible to avoid roughing with some types of 3D job. But beginners should never skip it until they master their process. And you're right: your machine and your finishing bit will thank you.
Best regards

What a beautiful chest, and a first time project ?? That's very impressive to say the least. You don't have to wait for more grandchildren to come, I have made my first grandson many, many things. My granddaughter, his sister has gotten a lot of her own. Keep up the great work, you have started ahead of the game. Thanks for sharing .

Beautiful work. I really like quarter sawn white oak.
I couldn't tell if you used toy box safety hinges. They are available from a variety of sources.

dah79 : "Could you share where you found the plans for the chest?"
I got plans for the chest from Fine Woodworking Jan/Feb 2011 issue, page 52. "Early American Blanket Chest". I replace the hand-carved flat panels with CNC-carved raise panels. Plus I added the inlay inside the lid.
Rcnewcomb : "I couldn't tell if you used toy box safety hinges."
I used "Sugatsune, Lamp SDS-C301N/BLK Lid Stays" available from Amazon.com for $21 each. I really like the slow-close operation with detent at open and close positions. Prices vary for same item, so shop around. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IK ... UTF8&psc=1
