Cutting Board

Post by rgerding »

Nice gift idea and easy to make and personalize. Juice groove is a bonus.

Nice piece of work. I like how the side area holds a v-carve and the grain goes in a different direction. Looks real nice.

Nice idea but when you glue two cross grains on a cutting board like this it is likely to crack in this area.

To JoeinWestMich I realize gluing crossgrain can be a problem so I used my biscuit jointer and put biscuits in the joint. I also used TitebondIII which is water resistant in the joint. I've made these in the past and they're still holding together. Very good observation.

What type of wood do you recommend for cutting board and what finish are you using to make it food safe ?

Any hardwood is good for cutting boards except Oak which has a loose grain. I use maple, walnut and cherry. I've found Howard's butcher block conditioner to be a very good product for finishing cutting boards.

Do you remember the font for the lettering. I am looking for a similar font for some boards

You can stop spending big $$$ on anything called butche block oil/conditioner. Go to your closest pharmacy, 2.99ish for 16oz of mineral oil. all you need, if you feel like you want a wax to make it shine a little more, go buy cheap beeswax. This will save you $$$$

<make and sell couple of hundred dollars of boards a month
