Entry table...

Post by Arbo »

Had a need to build an entry table, as anything I found made sucked (IMHO). So I picked up 45 board feet of alder and took it to a friends wood shop and got busy.

Of course I needed to take a few parts home and throw them on the CNC once I had the carving files as I wanted them. A good bit of finishing work, but I think vcarve makes a world
of difference on this one.

Really nice. I like the design of the table and the carvings really make it work. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks everyone. Am slowly working on sanding the carvings... for some reason I don't seem to know the best way, so have some of those 3m sanding disk things (like little arms on it) and slowly go about it with those, but they get small fast, so I go through a lot of them. I did realize I have some diamond tipped bits for the dremel and i think with a light touch i can use those, gonna take a bit of time to get them where I want them.

Hardware on the way (hinges and pulls) went with oil rubbed brass (hammered on the pulls). I didn't want to use any stain as I liked the color of the wood with just poly on it (on tests), but not sure if the doors will pop enough. Guess I need to throw some of the scrap on the table and route them and do some tests, from just poly to light stain to painted in the carvings to even running a torch over the carvings and then sanding the tops... who knows what will look best. Suggestions welcomed.

Try a glazing technique with a light colored gel stain. It helps accent the carving without changing the overall color of the project.

I have used gel stain before but it seemed to seep too much, but I didn't use sealer first like that pdf talks about, so will have to try that on some scraps, guess I need to hit the hardware store for some supplies for testing all this out.

use sealer first
Using the sealer makes a huge difference. It gives you much more control.

I found with samples, with sanding sealer everything was a lot more consistent in color (for stain or whatever).. Though I think I liked The wood conditioner better, seemed to bring out more in the wood. Either way it seems the cuts soak up more stuff so are naturally darker, probably because that is basically end grain in there exposed.

Did filling and a lot of sanding down to 220. More to go, but will hit that and sanding in the carvings tomorrow. Hoping the door hardware shows up today as it should so I can just fondle it a bit... lol.

I used varathane wood conditioner. It really seems to bring out the wood well. The final finish will just be a clear, as I like the color.
