Carving Cast Iron

Post by Gaffboat »

Okay, not really, but it looks like cast iron. I carved this sign out of mdf and then finished it with Sculpt Nouveau’s Iron B coating and then a final patina was applied to rust the iron particles in the paint. I photographed it outdoors so the the rust effect could be appreciated but it is an interior sign.

Really nice, as usual. Stuff like this always amazes me, the rust on a non-metal base.. I must try something like this sometime...joe

Wonderful piece! I love the Sculpt Nouveau metal finishes and patinas. One of my favorite pair of products is the Iron B and the Vista Rust Patina. Very realistic outcome. I also love their SmartCoat Clear coats. Excellent and durable protective finish.

Ditto to what everyone else stated. Awesome!
Did you draw your own Pelican or is vectors from a company?

The patina is a liquid from Sculpt Nouveau that you spritz onto the Iron B coating while it is still wet and it rusts the iron particles in the coating. The patina can also be applied after the coating is dried if you scuff the surface with steel wool or a nylon pad to expose the iron. Although that method is not as successful as applying to the wet coating, it helps to touch up an area where you want more rust.

Excellent finish there! I need to get me some of the Sculpt Nouveau metal finishes and Patinas - they really transform a piece to something Wowy!
I've always admired Michael Tylers finishes on his POM.

Great stuff - thanks for sharing.
