Hey all,
after reading this forum for over a year, I figured it was finally time to contribute. this is a property sign i'm making for my brother as a Christmas/birthday present. it's 1" thick white oak, 24"x16". I have a smaller machine so it had to be done in a few setups, but I think it was worth it. hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy viewing all of your projects. there are some very talented woodworkers sharing here.
Happy holidays

Re: Property sign
Nicely done. If it is going to be exposed to the elements, be sure to use a finish with a UV blocker to minimize the sun's damaging effects. I would suggest a marine spar varnish with UV blocker. It is softer than regular varnish so it is better able to move with the wood without cracking.

Absolutely gorgeous. I'm sure your brother will be very pleased.
When you say it had to be done in a few steps, do you mean you used the tiling function?
What is the font you used for Six Oaks?

Re: Property sign
thanks guys,
I ended up using General Finishes Exterior 450, is does have UV stuff in it. after reading the cans of finishes at my local woodcraft store, the marine spar varnish they had was only a top coat, it required an epoxy basecoat first. talking with some of the guys at the store, they highly recommended the 450, so i'll give it a try. I have a feeling that my brother will end up mounting it on the front porch, so it will have some protection from the elements.
yes I did a through Y tiling tool path for the main body of the sign. then I carved the tree and the arch in a separate piece and biscuited them together. the "six oaks" font is call "imprint MS shadow" I don't know who comes up with this names.
Thanks

Re: Property sign
I just did some White Oak parking signs for a customer and I used the Total Boat Spar varnish that is linked in a previous post. Total Boat is a good product. I do not recommend Helmsman from the local borg stores.
