Carved clock using 1/2" plywood and clock parts from Klockit. I used Varathane before carving and then used water based paint so that any paint outside the lines could be easily wiped with wet cloth.

Mate, that looks great. I have always wanted to make a nice clock. So you are saying that you sealed the plywood with a gloss coat before machining
to allow you to be able to wipe the paint away when required. Did that also prevent the paint from seeping through the wood as it sometimes does?.

Yes, as you can see, the paint does not seep.

When using the seal first technique as described above I have had some bleeding when painting/staining the carved features when using soft porous woods like aspen. What I now do in anticipation of that problem is to spray an additional coat of polyurethane or lacquer over the entire project after the carve. I wrap a flat block of scrap wood with a paper towel to wipe off any paint or stain that ends up outside of the desired area. That way the wiping process does not reach into the carved area and wick out too much of the paint. It leaves a nice crisp border.
