Dimensional sign

Post by Gaffboat »

I wanted to try my hand at a dimensional sign and this is what I came up with. It was carved from 1" thick 15# HDU precision board and is roughly 17" x 20". Primary tools were a .25 end mill and a 90 degree V bit. There are no 3D models involved, only V Carve vectors.

Very Nicely Done!!! The paint job along with the use of a v-bit is terrific too giving a 3D dimensional look with the color variations!

Well Done!

Very nice job.
I'll bet the entire piece carved out fast, much faster than a 3d model.

Well, the finished sign certainly looks 3D. The 'gator looks like he has been carved like a 3 dimensional model. Great work!!...joe

Nicely done and the shading in the paint job really helped with the illusion of 3D. Like rej said - it must have run very fast! And time is money in this business!

Hi,
Very nice work, it sure looks like 3D. Super painting skills at work. I also have a new upgrade from Shark pro to HD4 and I would like to know if I could PM you a question on the operation of your HD4? I noticed as my unit, when it is carving the X axis the drive shaft has a up & down movement. I have contacted Newwaveautomation but not much help so far.

Turned out very nicely, thanks for sharing. I am ok with this sort of thing until it comes to painting
Hopefully one day I will be able to paint like that but only time will tell

Trust me, I'm not much of a painter either but I'm willing to push my skills by attempting new stuff. The real tedious part was painting the tops of the letters which I accomplished with a small flat chisel-shaped brush. I use water-based paints which can be thinned enough to make them almost transparent.

The shadow areas on the alligator were done with a very thin darker color that was easily applied and then blended like water colors. A coat of dark glaze was applied to everything and then wiped off so it only remained in the lines of the alligator and deep in the grooves of the wood grain.

Fortunately, as everyone has noted, the shadow areas on the alligator create the illusion of more dimension than actually exists.

That is what makes it so well executed
