I guess I am under powering my steppers. after hours of running they are easy to touch
very mild warm. I think I will check with a digit thermometer to see how hot they get after
long run.

Don, no point checking them after a long run, they cool pretty quickly & will be at their hottest when working hard. When they are not actually driving the axis (just holding) the current should drop which will mean the motor cools
