CNC Wagon Wheel

Post by Tailmaker »

I want to build a functional wooden garden cart, something like a 2-wheeled wheelbarrow and I want it completely made from wood, without screws, nails and bolts. To be sure it can be done I started making a wheel over the weekend, kind of like the old wagon wheels, 24" diameter and 16 spokes. Lacking the iron hoop (and having a CNC router at hand), I made the rim segments interlock with dovetails and crooked the spokes to achieve a double dish spoke layout for better rigidity (like a radial spoke bicycle). I used simple 3/4" pine board from HD for cost reasons.

I think it came out quite nice. Now I need to make another one and build the cart box.

All tool paths created with VcarvePro

Custom vacuum pod to hold the segments:

Cutting 4 of 16 spokes (2-sided):

to be continued...(2 more posts with pics)

Trueing up and chamfering on the lathe (sometimes it is good to have a lathe with 24" diameter capability).

That is amazing! I have saved the pictures for inspiration for similar projects that won't fit on my machine. Really got my thinking with this one!

Quite the display of craftsmanship. Thanks for sharing.

Picture #6. What kind of Hammer is that? I have never seen one with that type of loop on the claw end.

Yes, it is a bottle opener and one of the more often used tools in my shop ;-)
Actually I bought it at a German building supply market as a funny novelty. But it has the right size for many small hammer jobs and a nice smooth round business end to not mar the wood.

Mate, that is some great work there!
Question, you said that the tool paths were done in v-carve, was the design also done in v-carve or some other CAD program?

regards

Nice work!!!
I really like the double spoke arrangement.
Would love to see the wheels once the tyres have been fitted and of course the completed wagon as well.
