Re: Hat Rack
Sorry Cowboy, this one is going in my deer camp.
Dwayne, I agree the rope detail came out really well, looks 3D
Scott, the silhouette is a separate piece cut from 1/8" clear plastic painted black. I cut the background, including a copy of the silhouette, undercutting the silhouette about a 1/16" so the plastic silhouette would be supported. Undercutting the wood allows the plastic silhouette to appear to float about the background. I masked off the stained edges and started spraying colors. I first sprayed the entire background white then started spraying yellows, oranges a little blue and some gray then came back and put a spot of white in the middle.
I'm pretty please how the sunset came out. Looks a lot better in person. My photography skills are lacking.

Re: Hat Rack
An instant classic...nice job. At the risk of the jokesters' comments, how did you get the rope hooks to stay erect?

OT Hat Rack
I sometimes think there was a translation error and the three Jewish men thrown into a fiery furnace by Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon were actually Hatrack, Meshach and Abednego...

Re: Hat Rack
I cut out a J shape in scrap wood as a form soaked the rope in 50/50 mix of water and white glue and placed it in the "J" form to dry. Almost worked, but not quiet as stiff as I wanted so I applied a coat of fiberglass resin. That did the trick, but now they were shiny. The final fix was to run them against a wire wheel to buff the shine off. There has to be a better way, but since this was a one off project I just wanted it done.zeeway wrote:An instant classic...nice job. Why is this in the vcarve gallery ? Your an Aspire user now
Looks good to me, you have posted some very interesting projects, always wondering what is next
There has to be a better way
You can buy matte finish resins I believe, never actually tried them myself as most of my carbon fibre work has that glossy look & I think people would think it was an imitation carbon fibre if it were matte
That would have saved you having to buff it to get the matte look

HF sells little spot sandblasters that you just fill the container with your abrasive of choice then spot blast inside a trashcan. Works like a charm I have used this method for years on various metalwork projects and stained glass.

Re: Hat Rack
The resin was just what I had on hand. I didn't know there was a matte finish resin, thanks for the info.
As for sandblasting, I thought about it, I have a sandblasting cabinet, just didn't feel like messing with it for such a small job. I decided to try the wire wheel and if it didn't work the sandblaster was the next step.
