DavidWestley a while back posted "Carving in Marble" where he showed off a great carving he had done. I told him back then I was going to make some. Well I finally got around to it. Here's my version.

What bit or bits did you use. How long does it take. Did you use a coolant.
Thank You

This was my first time cutting marble so I took it real slow.Makingtoothpicks wrote:What bit or bits did you use. How long does it take. Did you use a coolant.

I used a 1/4" 60deg vbit. Cut depth was .015. Speed 8000, feed 20 IPM, plunge rate 10 IPM. No coolant, ran it dry.
All went well, not sure I'd use the bit for wood again, but I'll use it again for marble.

So the runtime has to be slower and you can do it wet. It does not heat, so the tool is not going to melt. It might crack if running at a high IPM and RPM. I want to use marble, my TiCarbide 3/8'' flat endmill and a pass depth of 3/16th. Thoughts?

I meant to say that it is dangerous to run it dry. I'll give it a shot next week to make my marble table tops.

Re: Carving in Marble Too
When I cut the original, I found the marble very very easy to cut. I cut it dry and it made very little mess. I used a v bit that takes replaceable carbide tips, and when examined under a magnifying glass, they showed no discernible wear (the edge still took shavings off a thumbnail).
Next time, I'd cut deeper and faster...
