Process:
3/8" Baltic birch plywood.
2 coats wipe on poly. Sand lightly
Carve back pocket
Carve front
Countersink switch screw holes. Mask 2 csk holes in unpainted area.
Fill design with black artists acrylic paint
Sand to remove excess paint.
Blow out sanding dust with compressed air.
Bandsaw and belt sand corners
3/16" roundover edges on table router.
2 coats of wipe on poly, sand lightly.
Glue regular switch cover in back pocket with medium instant glue.

Mike,
Not looking a gift horse in the mouth, but why is the "Back side pocket" offset to the right? I'm assuming that's for the switch plate. Shouldn't it be center on the two light switch holes?

The back side pocket is mirrored because you flip the board (side to side) to cut it. It is also cut a little oversize on the width so you don't have to be real precise when you flip the board.

Never mind, I figured it out, the switches are offset just a bit and the pocket is on the backside so it's showing in reverse mirror.

Thanks for sharing, Mike. Gonna make a single switch for my S.O.'s grandson. He loves dragons. Great idea and thanks again. will post when I do it.

Not sure why the original plate has to be fitted into this? Is it for safety reasons?

Yes. Electrical code requires that cover plates be non flammable. Also, it reduces the chances of the wood splitting if you tighten the screws too much.
