I recently completed this box for a project swap on a woodworking forum. I did the design in VCarve Desktop.
All of the top was done on my CNC, even the inside face, which used just a 1/4" endmill.
The waves and groove around them were cut with a 90° v-bit.
The shell cutout was done with a 1/16" endmill because of some tight corners. I used a real sea shell, drew around its perimeter with pencil, scanned it, then traced the bmp in VCarve.
Ripples were cut with a 60° v-bit at three different depths to similate real ripples.
Border texture was done with a 1/8" ball nose endmill.
The final cutout of the top was done with a 1/4" endmill.
For the base of the box, I used the outline of the top to create a pattern to use on my bandsaw; I wasn't trying to get an exact match, just something close.

Re: A Small Box
Someone stuck some chewing gum to the top of it. Heh. Seriously, it looks real nice. Thank you for sharing.

Re: A Small Box
Bill that is really good.
It is creative and imaginative.
Nice work using the features in V-Carve.
Also a nice job describing the operations and tools used.
Definitely a job to take pride in

Only a Georgia boy would think of chewing gum! Actually, that's what I used to stick the shell to the top.Savannahdan wrote:Someone stuck some chewing gum to the top of it. Heh. Seriously, it looks real nice. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks, Leo! And thank you for your encouragement to go for VCarve. Desktop is working well, but I'm sure I'll do the Pro upgrade before long.Leo wrote:Bill that is really good.

Re: A Small Box
That box is really really nice.
I like the "out of the box" approach. (pun intended)
