Xmas gift season is here...carving away at some things. I thought this one turned out nice - wanted a old/rugged look to this one.
Carved in cheap pine....cherry stain applied
Then I sealed it, added a layer of black paint and wiped it away from the surface, and then added a coat or two of lacquer.
Lacquer was still drying in this pic...i used a foam brush to apply, that's why you see air bubbles - they dissolve away as it dries.

It's about 18" x 8". I would have made it a little bigger but my machine is only has a 24" footprint so it takes way less time to stay smaller so that I can cut it all at once.
