Napkin Holder

These napkin holders are a bit fragile. Marty said that 3 out of 9 chipped out pieces while they were being cut, but I don't think that they'd look as good if they were thicker.

After we did the first design with the stylized "H" for Hartman, we immediately got requests to do them with "S", "P", and "J".

Very nice design. I've been working on a few napkin holders I need to have for our parish's Fall Festival. I'll post pictures when they are completed.

Jane, here is the crv as requested. Both sides are identical, and we cut both sides on one piece of wood in order to minimize bit changes. However, this forum limits the size of the attachment to 2M and with both sides the file was too big. So I deleted the 2nd side and the file is 1.6M, small enough to upload. You can either cut the sides one at a time or recreate the 2nd side in VCP.

We carved a Script "H" in the center for our last name, but of course you can change this to whatever you want. Make sure you cut out the pockets in the center rather slowly so they don't chip out. We lost a few because of this.

Have fun!
Andy

Andy, thank you for the file. I ran it and figure I'd have 9 out of 9 fail on me. Just having one of those weeks.

Thank you for sharing. I wonder if I can make it or explode it. Ha, sometimes I just tear up things but I would like for this to turn out.

thanks, - Bill

Dan, I wonder what can be done to have fewer fail. Perhaps slow the feed rates?

On very fragile wood, like thin cherry, I've had success at finishing with diluted polyurethane and letting it dry thoroughly before machining. I'm not sure if there are other wood hardener out there that would also improve the strength of the fibers much better.

Oops, Andy, I think I misled you in thinking that I had try to cut the napkin holder and had a bunch of fails. I've been working on three other projects and haven't had time for the napkin holder, yet. I'll let you know what the outcome is. Hopefully I can get to it next week. It seems that on some projects we have to sort of stabilize the wood.
