You can see my two versions here: http://forum.vectric.com/viewtopic.php? ... 3&start=15

Other revisions were created by other people.

My version of the large butterfly box. Since I didn't have any 2" thick Cherry to make up the body I had to laminate 3/4" pieces together and then carved it on the Carvewright as raster with the 1/8" long ball nose bit as one piece. Really long carve! For the hinge, I used a brass hinge pin and small brass screws with regular wood glue to secure each section to the lid. Thank you Marty and Andy (llwood).

Steve,

Looks great, I have made several of the small one but not any large ones yet. I hadn't thought of flocking the insides, great idea.

Just thought I'd show how I used small brass screws and Titebond 2 glue to attach the hinge parts.

Great how other people have made & modified the original & then posted the results

Steve, like the flocking, I had a quick try after one of your other posts but must be doing something wrong as results weren't very good. Haven't had time to go back & experiment a bit more yet though

Final got a chance to cut this weekend.
I am cutting the small version of the box.
As I am using a Pirahna, I needed to cut the Base in two pieces, which will be stacked and glued.

I found that my tram is out, as this was the first time using a bit larger than a 1/4 inch. 3/4 inch bit for surfacing showed the flaw.
The grooving is so minor, that 2 strokes with medium grit sandpaper removes them.

Also found that my 90 degree V-bit is not truly 90 degrees. I will re-cut with one pass of the V-bit and later determine true angle of the bit later.

The joys of CNC :)

So... Almost ready. Need to re-cut the Top half of the base, and the Lid
then a quick cut of hinge pieces.

I will post pictures later, as they as currently on my phone.

Here are the files from my first cuts.
Note the grooving due to 'slightly off' tram.
I as need to re-cut the BaseTop due to bit deflection at 16k rpm, bumping up the speed to 24k.

btw,
The groove on the top of the first picture is my pass @ zero. I used this to setup the next bits to match exactly.

And if anyone is interested in the "split base" here is the CRV file.
I used the 1/4EM to cleanup tool marks from the 1/2 Round Nose used in the pockets.

You can find Andy's original box files for a larger and a smaller butterfly box at the top of page two of this thread. From reading through the thread, you will need at least VCP8 (or later) software version. Then on page 5 partially down, you can find dxf files for those who may have an older version of the software. Then later in the thread, someone else shared a variation of this box.

I have found on this forum and others, it is always a good idea to look completely through a thread like this when wanting or looking for shared files. First, the files are often shared later in the thread once several people say "pretty please will you share." Second, its still good to keep looking because sometimes the person who shared the final finds something they needed to fix and will share an updated file so you would want that file over the first one shared. Then, if you keep looking - sometimes there are directions/details and info. that may not have originally been shared but are once people start asking some detailed questions. Finally, often later in the thread, there may be a different idea/modified version from what was originally shared by someone else and you might also want that file. I have found that if you go back to older threads here, there are many files to be found if you are willing to take your time and look through the threads throughly. I just do a few at a time as time permits and keep track where I left off.

Good luck and show us what you make if you give it a try. This one is also on my "try" list once life quits interfering with my play time.
