Butterfly Box

Postby llwood » Mon May 04, 2015 8:42 pm

This box uses a modification of Glenn's wooden hinge (posted in the Dresser Box thread, viewtopic.php?f=5&t=19336

I redesigned it to connect three pieces, a base and two moving lids. In this way, the rounded part of the hinge looks like the body of the butterfly (the attachments are not visible) when the lids are closed, and both lids can be opened independently like wings on a butterfly. The vCarve design on the wings modeled after a Monarch.

Use as a jewelry box. I originally thought to pocket out compartments for individual pieces, but I think it works better to have only one compartment each side.

Fantastic. I could just picture a handfull of those (different sizes/materials) mounted on a wall (ensuite maybe) as a functional art piece, with little hooks/shelves inside and small magnets inset to hold the doors closed.

If the box was made 2X or so larger, I think the pockets might be a nice addition. Nice project.

Mobius, I think hanging them on the wall is a great idea. With hooks, it would make a great key holder.

CarveOne, I've already designed a version of this that's smaller, but a version that's 2x larger would be 23"x15". That would definitely make it large enough for compartments, but I'm wondering how practical a jewelry box of that size would be....

And, thanks everyone for the encouragement. You are the shoulders on which we stand.

Nice job. I really like it.
I think boxes made on our machines are really fun. I might have to make this a go.

Ok, maybe 1.25x to 1.5x then. I made some layered elliptical boxes last year that worked out well.

Somebody sent me a private message with the subject "Butterfly Box", however, when I try to read the private message, I'm unable to. I see only, "You are not authorised to read private messages." Apparently, "new users" to the Vectric forum have some abilities limited, including the ability to read private messages. I seem to be perpetually stuck in this disabled new user state, even after years of membership.

Please either post your message to me here or, if you prefer a private communication, send email to andy@clutterfreeservices.com.

Thanks,
