Since we're on the topic of hinges, Michael Tyler posted plans for a hinged picture frame in Aug, 2011. http://www.vectric.com/cool-stuff/proje ... -frame.htm
I modified his idea and started making wooden hinges. This basic idea went in many different directions, but here's what I did with the hinge venture:
Here is the file I developed for hinge making.
You could use tabs to hold parts to the board. I used carpet tape to attach the wood to a spoil board. The holes drilled in the wings of the hinges are for the insertion of alignment dowels. This makes it easier to glue the assemblies. All cuts were made with a .125 end mill.

Here is .CRV for small hinges (for 1/2" thick top, surface glued.
Material .5 The pocket was for 3/8" thick pulls
1/8" downcut endmill for hinges and hinge pin holes (bamboo skewer fits nice)

And I did put tiny button magnets in back of drawers that hit set screws, just the right pull

Hello Steve,

I was thinking your design (shape) would make a nice box (men or woman's) if I only make the top tray and top.
A little thicker, maybe 1 1/4 -1 1/2 top tray with a wood piano hinge, would be quick to make and then engrave or inlay initials in top.
The wood hinges where surprisingly quick to make and attach with medium gel CA glue, they cut really clean in dense wood like the Yellowheart I used
Good gifts or item to sell.
You could get fancy and laminate different woods, would look good too.

I downloaded the Jbox file and have been looking at it. One thing I ran into can best be demonstrated by the attached screenshot. There's a lot of unnecessary cutting at the top of the piece. I can see no reason for this to happen - no apparent extraneous stuff in the drawing. Any ideas?

Hey, I'm camping right now and only have an iPad so I can not check it. But it looks like you have too many layers turned on. The bottom should only have the outside profile and five drill holes (I think, it has been a long time).

Look at the last picture on the first post of this thread. It shows all the pieces individually, along with the back piece that will fit into three of these drill holes.

I hope you can figure it out, or someone else with a computer can help.

There are two layers in the file I downloaded: Top Tray and Small Tray. In the photo I posted, only the Small Tray layer is on.

Below in the photos I have one layer at a time turned on. In both cases, the cut runs off path. Actually, it looks like the cut starts off path, then ends off path. In any case, it's unnecessary cutting.

Looks like a toolpath lead in and out to me. Helps to prevent marks at the start and end of the cut.

Thanks, Dave. That's what it is. I see now that I can turn leads on and off; might come in handy for some of my stuff.

I've had VCarve for a few weeks and still have a lot to learn.

SPalm, sent me a PM and asked me to look as I built one of his boxes, but seems you have figured...... leads.... use if you wish or eliminate. I think I used and it does eliminate tool marks. SPalm designs nice projects and his other goodies are very nice as well.
