Routed Jewelry Box
Re: Routed Jewelry Box
Thank you so much Steve. I had a go at it, with a slight mod. I have replaced the base with another tray. Timber is Tasmanian Oak, with Merbau funiture.
The only problem, is that you have got me onto a slippery slope. 2 daughters now want one, which I expected. 2 sisters want one, wasn't expected. 9 nieces have put up their hands...oh crap!

SWEET!
Good job. You brought a smile to my face. And what a wonderful inlay you put on the top.
Making more huh? Take it as a compliment, you deserve it.
We did have a family debate on whether to make the bottom a tray. I lost - you won. I like it, although it is a little hidden.
I think it is kind of neat making something other than signs with VC. Stretches the thinking cap.
Once again, it looks great.

Re: Routed Jewelry Box
Thanks for that Steve, but the credit goes to you.
I just realised that I posted one of your photo's, my apologies for that...it was definitely unintentional. Should have been this one.

Re: Routed Jewelry Box
May I ask how you did the outside of the salt boxes? It isn't simply cut out.
Thanks
Thanks

@shearder:
If you mean the scallop on the sides of the Salt Box that I did, (not this box) I used the Flute feature.
Go to this link:
http://www.vectric.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=12440
And see the design files that use it in post # 9 ( you can load and watch it yourself)
And I did a quick explain in post # 12
I hope this helps,
Steve

SPalm,
Thanks again for the .CRV, just started one last night, I barely have enough Mayan Walnut to complete (and can't find more), better not screw up!!
Greg, great job, also here is a inlay design I cleaned up that would be nice for a young girl's jewelry box, if your interested feel free

Hey Glenn,
Mayan Walnut, sweet. That looks like some really nice carving. Hope it works out for you.
And your design file downloaded, thanks.

Re: Routed Jewelry Box
SPalm,
Steve,
If your around, can you tell me if you made the wood hinges or you bought them?
I made one small change, not drilling the three center dowel holes, I'm going to glue the top tray to the back block and then attach with a couple #6 screws from bottom. The two dowels seem to keep everything lined up.
One tip, (you may have done this) I clamped the whole works together (w/o spacers of course, but with dowels installed) and sanded the "block" with the DA and then hand block to 320
90% of the hard sanding quick
Thanks again for the file
P.S. I may mill a groove in the back panel for a magnetic strip, my wife never closes drawers all the way

Re: Routed Jewelry Box
I did the same sanding trick, but yours looks a lot better. Looks like a good idea with the assembly, it'll be nice to see the results.
I used some homemade wooden hinges. Mostly because I am cheap. Here is a link to how I made them:

Re: Routed Jewelry Box
SPalm,
Thanks,
I've known about wood hinges for years but never had a reason to use them. If I'm going to make wood pulls, may as well go with wood hinges for your fancy little box. I'll try my box joint jig to index the slots.
I web searched wood hinges and I guess nobody sells any. You would think by now someone would be mass producing them. (machine made)
Oh, I don't believe the part about being cheap, anyone that owns a cnc router, can't be but so cheap!
Glenn
