Gear Gadget

Post by dme2637 »

I'm not sure if this is the right spot to post this but, is there any way to make a flat gear from the gear gadget?

A flat gear is called a rack. They are easy to make since the sides of the teeth are straight. Google "gear rack dimensions" to see what you need to draw one.

The attached file is for a 20 degree 1 DP (diametral pitch) gear rack. Reduce the size to suit the DP, for example a 5 DP rack would be 1/5th size.

In order to cut a rack using a router, it is necessary to add a radius extending the dedendum.

For those of us out there are 'somewhat or a lot gear challenged' there are a couple of software packages available at a reasonably low cost:
Gearotic 2.0 and Gear Template Generator
BOTH OUTPUT FILES TO MULTIPLE FORMATS
BOTH CREATE PRECISE GEARS

Gearotic 2.0 [formerly Gearotic Motion] does all types of gears, includes shafting, shaft layout, has 3d simulation, and about a hundred how to videos
Written by Art Finerty the developer of Mach3
Has a lifetime price of about $120 [all upgrades/updates are free for life]
In my experience Art Finerty an Bob Landry are super responsive to questions.
Videos can be accessed without owning the software

Gear Template Generator
Costs about $25
Creates lots of gears but does not include shafting, only one spoke design, no 3d viewing, requires a bit more technical knowledge than Gearotic 2.0
