Post for a Masterwood Speedy 207

Post by dustboy »

I have an old Masterwood Speedy 207 CNC boring machine that I will be modifying with the addition of a spindle, for use as a hobby point to point machine.

I would love to use VCarve again, what are the chances of finding a Post Processor to make this machine work?

Can you post an example of code that actually runs well?

Hey, good to hear from you, Gary! Hope you're well.

This is code that was included on the 3.5" floppy  disk with the machine. Yes, apparently you can still buy a floppy drive on the internet. I have successfully run a "Demo" program, but it drilled quite a few more holes than the code would indicate. The instruction manual and controller interface are poorly translated from Italian so it's hard to know what is really going on. I miss WinCNC!

I am, thenks.

The Italians make great machines. They just don't make them so we can understand.

Why don't you just throw a WinCNC controller on the machine? Beat of both worlds.

So right now this is a boring machine only? Is it one big drilling head?

If it doesn't have a spindle now, will the control support a spindle?

I used to use a Masterwood 327, but the code was not like that. With the 327, I would be able to use the spindle with V Carve Pro, but probably not the drills. But V Carve didn't even exist back then. (1997)

I would love to run WinCNC. Can I set it up to run the servo drives existing on the machine? Or would it be easier to swap everything out for a stepper system?

The machine has no z-axis, only a pneumatic actuator limited by mechanical stops. It has a drilling block with 3x3 drills on 32mm centers, and an opposing pair of horizontal drills for edge boring. On the side it has a grooving saw. I bought it with 6 hours  on the meter. It would be fun to keep the drilling block but the goal is to get a spindle running with a real z-axis. I have no use for the grooving saw so I was thinking of putting a spindle in its place.

A complete retrofit is probably your best bet, as the original control will probably not work with the spindle.
Retrofitting these machines is not for the faint of heart, but that machine is probably a lot less complex than most Italian machines.

If the servo drives have a step and direction option, then you can do it. If not, look at Centroid Oak

The spindle will likely be an off-the shelf 2 1/4 HP router. So, all the controller has to do is move it around. Adding the Z-axis would require a controller replacement for sure, but for now I would be happy just to use Cut 2D for some simple through-cutting and pocketing at mechanically preset depths.

I've sent an inquiry to Centroid, and to WinCNC.
