Metric or Inches

Post by Ms Wolffie »

When I run the TAP file, does it matter to the carving whether I forget to change from inches to metric, please?
Thanks
Wolffie

Your control software must be set to the same units that the TAP file is set to.

Within the Vectric software you can draw in inches or mm's and then output in either. It does all the conversions for you.

Thanks Adrian.
I keep forgetting to click on the little button.
Next update, is it possible to tell the software to remember the last used settings?

It already does that. The Inch/MM setting defaults to the previously used setting.

If you load someone elses file (helping someone out on the forum for example) they may have a different setting which will the program will default to next time it's started. I get that all the time as I always work in metric and 99% of the people on the forum seem to work in inches!

I work in metrics (ozzie) and every time I turn the machine on it has gone to inches, of course I sometimes forget to check it
Haven't run anyone else's files as yet.

Are we talking about the Vectric software or your control software?

Control software.
Yesterday the machine went berserk and refused to move on the Y axis.
Just ruined a good piece of New Guinea Rosewood.
It did the whole model on the Y and X axis.
When I stopped the machine, I could jog X and Y but not Z.
There were a whirring sound but no movement.
Could jog the Z by hand.
I believe we have worked it out to be a hardware problem, the board that controls the Z has blown up or whatever it is called.
Found out the loan box has done a lot of mileage. It has probably been slowly dying.
My own box is winging its way back to me, so hopefully my woes are over.

Hi,
Vectric do not write the control software, that is provided by Next Wave Automation who produce the Shark.

Brian
I was just informed about that.
I believe it is a common misconception that because the pp files are in the Vectric software, it is produced by Vectric.
I promise never again to complain to Vectric about the pp software.

The pp files are part of the Vectric software and most are written by Vectric.

The software that actually makes your shark move is not written by Vectric as Brian says.

The fact that your control software doesn't remember its unit settings is nothing to do with the pp files.

Very confusing :?

I do hope that whomever is able to fix it will do so. NWA?
One cannot cut correct size when the software in incorrect.
I noticed that when I tell the router to step in 0.1mm increments, it actually goes in .013mm per step (the software that is, not the router), it is impossible to land on 0.00 by stepping.
Imperial measurement does not come easy to me.
I was born into metrics too many moons ago :D
