Re: Rotary Tutorial
Hi Randall, wonderful tutorial!! I was just looking at your latest additions and it seems the pictures starting with exercise 3 are not showing up in the tutorial. If I try to open them in another tab, I get a 404 not found error message. Is there something we can do on this end to see the pictures? Also another question. I see you have your lathe chuck attached directly to the indexer motor shaft. What type of coupling are you using with the chuck? I'm trying to adapt my Jet mini lathe for an indexer, but I'm concerned about the chuck on the threaded spindle coming loose when the indexer reverses rotation. I'm not sure how to lock it in place. Has anyone overcome this problem? Again, thank you for all your efforts.

Norm,
LockTight comes in different strengths. I used a dab of rubber cement.

Re: Rotary Tutorial
I use a grub screw. Drilled and tapped through the side of the hex on the chuck, face plate or whatever.rnweller wrote: I'm trying to adapt my Jet mini lathe for an indexer, but I'm concerned about the chuck on the threaded spindle coming loose when the indexer reverses rotation. Not the most elegant or high tech solution but it works.

Re: Rotary Tutorial
Bill and Greg, Great ideas. I'll try both of these. I'm almost ready to try making chips this weekend. Many thanks.

Re: Rotary Tutorial
Sorry for the errors on the tutorial web pages. I'm in the middle of a major update of the material. I'd hoped to have it complete by March 1st, but it looks like it will take me into the weekend to complete things.
Needless to say I've developed a much greater appreciation for the tutorials the Vectric lads have put together. Things always seem easier when someone else does the work <wry smile>.

Re: Rotary Tutorial
Randall,
I have a major complaint about your tutorial!!!
My house is a lot colder than it would have been (I burn my mistakes in the wood-stove ) if I hadn't used used your excellent Wrapped Rotary Machining tutorial.
We all look forward to the updates.

Re: Rotary Tutorial
I have broken up the information a bit. I'd like people to read through a General Overview that I put together that is not software specific -- it just describes concepts and goes through some of the mechanics. Please provide any suggestions for improvement.

Re: Rotary Tutorial
Well done Randall.
You might consider redoing the graphic for the spiral cut by placing the strip of paper at the angle it would wrap around the cylinder.
Bill
PS: Is that you in the videos?

Re: Rotary Tutorial
Michael Lickteig is the one in most of the videos who does the talking. He and I started the business (222 Artisans, LLC) together back in 2005. I'm the silent one with the large belly who is loading the material in the indexer. Is that you in the videos?

Re: Rotary Tutorial
I've also updated the examples for a Y mounted indexer. Please review these. When they are satisfactory I'll generate a set for X mounted indexers. Please review at:

Re: Rotary Tutorial
It looks like things are stable enough that I can start translating some of the Y axis examples into examples that will work with X mounted indexers. I hope to have that done by the end of next week.

Re: Rotary Tutorial
Jack Jarvis has written a section on supporting long/thin material in the indexer. I have added this to the General section of the tutorial.

Re: Rotary Tutorial
Would someone be interested in taking over the indexer tutorial and updating it? I'd gladly transfer the HTML files and photos to the next custodian.
Since I've moved to the San Francisco Bay area I've not had time to work on it. Also, none of the shops I've looked at have indexers so I no longer have a local way to validate my work.
Any takers?

Sure thing you bet I'll do it.
