rotary work

Post by Wayne Locke »

Here are a couple of church candle stands I did a while back. I used to have a Legacy semi manual setup for spiraling work with the Magnate bits. It worked really well and made me good bit of money but the rotary indexer is much more versatile and has allowed me to go well beyond the Legacy/Magnate work and to emphasize some of what the cmc excels at. This is a Padauk & Oak candle stand with Brass inlays.

. The spirals are done with a 1" Cove bit and was pretty fast. The inlays are done with brass powder. This is an Oak candle stand done with the texture tool path and a 1/4" bullnose bit which was also fairly fast to cut.

Both of these illustrate using specific cnc capabilities which would be difficult or impossible without a cnc rotary indexer. The magnate bits are fine and Legacy really figured out how to do them on their semiautomatic machines but compared to the design choices available with the cnc are somewhat crude.

These are really great. I tried to adapt the Magnate bits to use on my Camaster cnc lathe but was not very successful. I think it has something to do with the bits as all of my other bits cut as expected.

That is really superb work.

I noticed that the base is segmented. Question:

Did you glue up the segmented blank and then mount it on the rotary or turn it on a lathe? I ask because I have not had a lot of success with the segmented stuff on the rotary, maybe I need to control my glue ups better in terms of concentricity?

One of the guys that bought a SideWinder Rotary machine from me, Jim Eddy, is a master of "all things segmented". One of his projects, the Illyria Lamp, is my favorite. Count the pieces...

Everything was cut on the rotary. I have been doing it a long time and gluing up the segments is not really problem.

The top and bottom are both segmented. If you don’t segment them you have end grain showing.

It is apparent you have been doing it for a long time, excellent work.

I don't have a problem with gluing up the segments, I use a seg-easy style jig to cut them and the segments go together perfectly every time. That thing is downright amazing. I just do not do as much turning as I would like to for some odd reason.

Where I get in trouble is gluing the rings together. Not as precise as I would like to see.
