Thanks for sharing Randall. Haven't gotten into rotary yet... Of course I need a 4th axis first...

Re: Tapered Octagon
Thanks Randall for this tutorial. I'm wanting to try and make some wooden wine glass stems for a friend who wants some custom wine glasses for a wedding gift. I'll engrave the glasses with my laser as well. The first picture is the design I came up with using a design package to show my friend the idea. I had no idea how to start in Aspire but after seeing this post, I've started working on a design, here's a preview of where I'm at. I'm thinking that I'll move the stem to my normal lathe to drill a hole for the stem and to turn an indent for the wine glass bowl to fit before using epoxy to set the bowl. Work in progress, thanks again!

Re: Tapered Octagon
I have made wine glasses on the rotary although not octagonal. I used a twisted Reuleaux triangle for the shape.
One thing to be aware of is the strength of the flared base. Because it is mostly short grain construction, if it is made a thin disc it is very fragile and likely to break in use.

Re: Tapered Octagon
Thanks Euan for the tip, will be careful and might modify the design a bit. While I’m trying to figure out how to actually use my rotary, I decided to 3D print a modified version of the stem from some wood filament. Showed me a couple of areas I may want to tweak in the final version so a fun prototype. I’m waiting to get the a actual wine glass I’ll use for the bowl to finalize the plan.
