Experiment with a flat-tipped roundover bit

Post by Rcnewcomb »

I was experimenting with alternating fluted and unfluted toolpaths on a column with a flat-tipped roundover bit. The piece is 22" long and 3.25" diameter in douglas fir.

I liked how that turned out. I have a few of those round over bits that I took the roller off so I could use it on the CNC for some edge work, but I never tried it on a rotary project. I think I'll give it a try. Thanks for the idea.

Gary...
When you say: " I have a few of those round over bits that I took the roller off so I could use it on the CNC for some edge work, but I never tried it on a rotary project." You may want to rethink that one. The bits Randall shows are made to plunge and bottom cut, not so much for ones you take the bearing off.

Gary,

Thanks for letting me know. I think I better test the router bits I got first to see just what they do. If bad results I'll go with the plunge type that you suggested.

I need to come up with a finish trim on some corners for this project I'm doing and Randall gave me a good idea how to do it. This is what I came up with, so hopefully it will work out.
