I am heavily into woodturning as a hobby. I wood like a way to probe the surface of one of my turnings and generate a point cloud, then use the point cloud to make a 3D model, then use the 3D model to create a design on the surface of the original turning.
Is it possible with VCarve Pro, Aspire, or any other software, to take a 3D model, in this case round, unwrap it and make a toolpath to carve on it's surface?
Rotary toolpath on 3D model??
Re: Rotary toolpath on 3D model??
Or is there another way to do this? Like a way to import the point cloud into one of those software packages for this purpose.

Hi, if you're using Mach 3, maybe this is some help to you?

Thanks for the reply Dave. I am a Mach3 user. I have seen that. I have a digitizing working. I am just tryin to figure out how to use resulting point cloud to do want I want to do.

Although I haven't done exactly what you're describing with a point cloud, it appears to me that if you can convert the point cloud to an STL file of some kind, you should be able to import the file into Aspire and unwrap it, as long as it meets Aspire's rules for imports (e.g., the center line remains inside the part through its entire length).
