Thanks for the kind words TIm. My bride to be (will be wife in 6 days) is not fond of the CNC Machine at all until she sees a paying customer come in and drop some cash. Then she is fine with the time that I spend.

The one thing I am trying to learn now is glazing. I saw you do it on one of your carvings and I loved how it made the detail pop, so I am trying to figure out ways to do that and make it look good.

Yes, glazing makes a world of difference.

If you haven't read it yet the following link takes you to a thread where I share the process I use.

A forum search for glazing or glaze will find you more information. I'm currently working on a step-by-step guide for Jim's October meeting and will post it on the forum when it's done.

Thanks for the link. Close to the process I am using now except I was using Lacquer Sanding Sealer instead of Shellac. Will try the Shellac though.

I've used both spray and brush-on lacquer sanding sealer, but tend stick to shellac as it's safer to use in a basement shop (however you still need to follow some precautions). I got great result with the sanding sealer and it didn't add color to the wood like the shellac does. Sometimes this is good, sometimes not.

Of interest, I like General Finishes products and they now have a water based sanding sealer. I ordered some last week and should get it tomorrow or Tuesday. I'll report back after trying that.

Look at the bottom item on this page:

Tim, I like your attitude on pricing. This piece finished, I would expect it to go for $250 to $300.
Just my opinion.

Thanks Jim, I take your price estimate as a compliment.

Obviously, if I priced it at $25 it would sell that same day. If I priced it at $400, it might sell but who knows how long it would take. So the issue is finding out where the sweet spot is between those two numbers, and I struggle with that.

That's why I like to sell on consignment as the owner's normally have a better feel for what they can sell it for, and they want to sell it so they get their money. A couple of them I've come to know will give me an opinion on price, but then act hurt when I don't leave it with them. So I try to avoid that.

I have to be careful in my area also because there are a lot of talented carvers who do it the old fashioned way. I'm sure there are residents and tourists that only want the hand carved items. So I always stress that it is machine carved (so nobody feels cheated) and try to price below the hand carved items. If people want the hand carved item, they pay the price. If they will settle for machine carved, they get a price break.

Tim,
Job Well Done... Looks fantastic.
Some would say you think Outside the Box.... I'd say you think out side the Frame!!
And the contrast between the frame and relief was excellently executed
