cutting on curved material

Post by AZsawdusty »

I have photovcarve software (REGISTERED) I have used it to successfully cut photos to wood on my hand made machine under kcam control for some time. My son has asked, I can to put photos onto the wood grips of a 1911 pistol. The grips are on a slight curve and the curve would need to be accounted for in the gcode.

I am looking for any help or software to help modify the gcode.

That is an interesting question. I would be interested in the answer. I am sure that, with some work, it could be done using Aspire.

If you can't do it with the CNC, it could always be lasered on the grip. see

Hello,
If you have Aspire, you can probably do it with the 'Project toolpath onto 3D model' option.
You will need to model the grip surface, and then you will be able to use the option I mentioned above to get the toolpaths onto the surface. Or the grip could probably be modeled with the photo included and cut all together.

Using Aspire a photo could be converted to a 3D component and added
to the 3D form of a grip. But this is very unlikely to work for the vast
majority of photo's because they simply cannot be converted to realistic
3D from the black = low to white = high height conversion.

The PhotoVCarve Groove engraving technique will not work onto a 3D
curved surface because the width of the grooves which causes the
contrast on a flat piece of material will be distorted.

Thank you Tony! While he will be a bit disappointed, Son will just have to live with it. Besides I cut really great pics of the grand children for him.
