Scroll saw fretwork lookalike issues on my cnc

Post by jerrysim »

Hi. Needing some advice on holding down the wood blank as it being machined. For the most part, I can almost mimic a scroll saw piece using 1/4 in. Baltic birch with 1/16 end mill. When the fretwork becomes fragile due to the smaller areas left after it is machined, the strength of the wood is gone and the bit tears up the remaining area and I'm wondering if anything can be done about it. Thanks jerry

Maybe a downcut spiral? That way the wood is being pushed into your spoilboard, where it will be support. I don't think I've ever cut anything quite that fine. Good luck.

Thanks guys. I'm using a Freud 1/16 bit end mill. That size is hard to come by, especially a spiral down style. I'm definitely going to do a search for it. I will also try the tape too. Thanks.

Sometimes selecting the cutting order can make a difference. I have manually selected the vector order so that it cut from the inside of the sheet to the outside.
Another possibility is to pause the program and use some hot melt glue on the previously cut area.

Had very good luck with this bit in the last 3 months in all species from Cherry to Bloodwood.

And have only tried this guys Fishtail bits in a .117" but VERY clean sidewalls and no splintering.
Some people swear by them though.

Use "vector selection order(don't optimize)" checkbox if you created them in the order you want cut, OR SHift/select in the order you want them cut and check that box when you toolpath.
I've had better luck carving any holes/shapes with "profile Inside" Before cutting any "profile outside" toolpaths.
Randall, does that tape release well/easily? Been using Ace Ext/fiberglas reinforced in 1.88" and like how fiberglass fibers let you Yank on it pretty good when releasing.

I've learned my lesson well. You can't please everyone,so you have to please yourself

Sharp bit and slower feed speeds [and prayer] is all I can think of offhand.

Considering scroll saw blades are hair thin, will never be an easy task trying to replicate by machine. I think I would try 1/8 wood, and a microbit with a downsized collet if necessary.
