giving 2D clipart (vectors) depth

Post by Coach B »

Sorry if this has been mentioned somewhere but I was unable to find it.

I am using VCarve Pro and I would like to take some of the 2D clipart panels and give them some depth. Specifically I am trying to make them concave and/or convex. I tried using the moulding toolpath but from what I have seen because it is a closed shape the path will only cut on the outside not the inside of the shape. I saw a design on the Inventables site that was similar to what I am trying to do (heart within a heart) but I can't seem to figure out how to do it Can anyone tell me if this is something VCP can do?

A picture of what you would like to achieve would be useful, there are things that you can do using vcarve pro but not sure it will give the look you are after, if you are looking for a convex or concave shape then it may be possible to use a dish or done model & then use the vector shape as a machining boundary, I use to do this when I was using vcarve pro for certain jobs

Thanks for the reply, I have attached a pic that is similar to what I would like to do. I don't need the smaller heart in the middle. I have a variety of shapes that I would like to give some 'depth' to whether it is concave or convex and I'm just not sure how. I am relatively new to the VCarve software and have limited CNC knowledge (but working on both).

If you want to make a clipart concave you need to add a zero plain component.

Coach, the only thing I can think of is to use the V-Carve method, but use a large ball nose or bowl , etc. type bit and set a shallow depth and use the same bit to clear out the flat area with a relatively small step over. See if my screenshots come through, maybe this will work for you...joe

You can make a pretty fair heart dish using the fluting toolpath. You cannot make a dome though using this technique.
Draw your heart shape and then draw a straight line that starts outside the heart and ends at the centre. Using the circular copy tool make a lot of copies (240 to 360) with a total angle of 360*. Trim all these vectors back to the outer shape. In Aspire there is a trim to vector tool, if VCP does not have that, use the snipping tool and work your way around. Make sure that rejoin vectors is switched off. Make sure that all these new vectors start at the outside.
Choose the fluting toolpath and select ramp over complete length and smooth ramp.
Hopefully that helps.

The OP is talking about 2D vector clipart not 3D clipart though.

In the training classes that I give I show how to use the molding toolpath to create this shape, as well as many more.
I'll be giving a presentation on this topic at Jim McGrew's Camp in April.
You may want to attend.

Here's a screen shot picture of the final work..
I'll have it cut in time for the Camp.

Thanks to everyone, I will try some of these and see what I get. The McGrew camp definitely looks interesting but the 1400 km drive may not be.

The molding toolpath as Michael has mentioned will produce a lot of what you want to do & you can produce both dished & domed shapes.

Would it be possible to use a stacked text technique with two layers to achieve this effect? I'll try this later and see if I can get it to work.
