Cutting deeper with a 1" bit??

Post by stefonroman »

Hello:

Is it possible to profile cut 1.5" deep with a bit that has a cutting distance of only 1". I would be using a pass depth of .135". The bit itself is 3" in overall length so it would technically reach, but does the cutter part have to be 1.5"?

Thank you for your time

Just be sure to blow out the chips, because they will not be able to clear the kerf on their own and will get packed in there. You might get a little build-up on the shank above the cutting portion, so keep it cleaned off with carbide cleaner when you notice it building up, or it will cause burn marks on your wood.

Other thing is that the shank diameter isn't larger than the cutting diameter

I do this quite a lot because I tend to use 6mm bits quite a lot for profile cutting, the long series & extra long series bits I buy only have a flute length of 25mm & quite a bit of what I am cutting is 32mm thick. Looked at buying bits with a longer flute length but the price frightened me

As Randall has said make sure you keep the chips cleared out.
