Here it is, finished and ready to go. Time constraints did not allow me to go nutz like I usually do on a finish. This one is very simple, The actual carved part has one coat of a dark walnut gel stain. I let this get into the crevices on the eagle and then dry brushed it out. Helps high light the eagle. The frame is not stained. Right now it is almost as dark as the carved board, but in a year or so, it will mellow to medium brown giving a nice contrast.
The top coat is several coats of a 2 lb cut shellac. It is then rubbed out with a paste wax in ultra fine steel wool.
The frame was a simple job on the router table and table saw.
I could not find a really good way to secure the medals, so they are held in with very small brass nails/tacks.
It will be going out to the Eastern Shore of Maryland on Tuesday and her Dad will get it on Thanksgiving Day.
I hope he likes it. He is 82 years old, VERY active and quite a character. While I was building it, I thought about how he had literally put his life on the line during WWII. Very sobering thoughts, indeed.

Corel Draw Feathering Macro
Found this macro for creating feathered edges. It should work for creating gradiations that could be converted to gray scale for 3D carving in PhotoVCarve. Have not played with it yet.

Hard Edges
I'm having a hard time because of Hard Edges, or where the edges of my shape are sharp drops in the Z causing my models to have crapy edges.... any thoughts?

I'm not sure if you know already, but your not going to get a detailed carving because there is no detail on that picture !!
But I ran it through anyway and here's a flat copy. I say flat because I wouldn't be happy with a rounder version since there's no detail anyway, but maybe I'm just awkward and picky! I did the hands and eye area seperate. If you want a smoother 'rounder' appearance just gaussian blur your original pic more before smoothing and inverting, then add back in the hands and eye, blur and smooth again to get the result you want. I hope this is helpful...or you could just blur my pic more and do the hands until your happy with them. The flat probably isn't what you want, but I suppose that depends on the application aswell so maybe it is....
