Anyone use air brush

Post by olf20 »

Do any of you guys use a air brush to localize your painting
on different items. Just wondering if it would apply enough
paint in V Carved letters and get the paint where you want it.
Thanks for any advise!

My wife uses her air brush to paint some of the carvings that I do. It takes a steady hand and setting a narrow paint line, but she gets good results. I need to resort to masking.

Do you use stick on masking? What brand?

From what I have seen there are a lot of people using Oramask 813 which is a stencil film manufactured by Oracal, others have said they use a draw lining film but not sure if any brands have been mentioned.
Personally I just use what I have lying around, been working as a signmaker using cad cut vinyl for a lot of years & as long as the bits you are using are sharp I find most vinyl films cut OK. Biggest problems people have are that they don't clean the substrate properly or don't apply it properly which then leads to problems. Most films have a pressure-sensitive film so firm pressure is required for them to stick well, a rubber roller is a good tool for this

I use masking a LOT. There are several brands out there.

1) before carving apply a good coat of sealer - like shellac. I use rattle can
2) do the carving
3) apply more sealer in the carved letters, text, clipart
4) paint the carving - I use rattle can spray paint
5) peal off the mask
6) I use a single edge razor like a scraper to scrape the carved area.
7) light sanding with 220

Do you put the mask on during step 0 or 1.5?

Put the mask on after the sealer (#1)

I believe one of the most common masking material is Oracal 651. It is made for outdoor vinyl work and it sticks pretty good (of course after you apply shellac or something to harden the wood). But I prefer the uscutter equivalent brand called Greenstar. It is just as good as Oracal 651 and it is a bit cheaper too. The only downside is that the backing is not labeled like Oracal 651. So be sure to label it somehow if your inventory has a lot of different types of vinyl (like mine does). Here is a link.

I use MacTac stick on shelf paper available from Home Depot in Canada, at least. As others have said, no matter what you use, the trick is to prep the surface and apply pressure with a J roller. Since it's pressure sensitive adhesive, I find it's best to let it sit for an hour or so before cutting with a very sharp V bit.
