led lights from ebay china ...$3.40 for enough for 3 of these ( shipping included)

These are fantastic and I'm intrigued for sure. Know that you are using Aspire to do these, but I currently don't have it nor is it in the budget so, doable using VCP?

mine, the last one, could be done with vcp except for the top wood piece, that is rounded, you would have to make it flat.

Here's one I did recently.
It is interesting that 3D style engravings work on this type of work. I didn't realize this and have been sticking to line drawings. Will have to give it ago.

PS the entire project was done in VCP

good results with .25 or .5 acrylic? want to get my feet wet in these but save a $ or 2 where possible before going to .75 or 1.0 stock.

These seem to be just as fun as litho's.

Hey neat signs-Are these run from battery or plug in? Where can A person get the lights/holders to use with the plastic?

The Numbers and drawings were engraved into 4.5mm clear perspex. There is then a piece of 2mm thick white perspex put on the rear between the clock and the engraving. I machined down a piece I use for Lithophanes, this hides the clock mechanism and makes the hands stand out.

Thanks for the link Greg. They look like the same LED strips I used on mine but the retailer I bought them from in New Zealand has gone out of them. The strips I used already have a socket wired on them so are ready to plug straight into a 12 volt plug pack as you can see in the photo below. I don't know if the ones in the link have a plug but even so it is good to know I can get more if I want them.
Here is the base I made for it. The LED strip just drops in and the socket goes through a hole in the base so it doesn't need to be removed to assemble. The top piece screws on top and it is assembled ready in seconds for the perspex. The perspex is nicely cushioned by the silicon strip casing.
Here are a couple more I did. One for home at Christmas time ans one for a birthday present for a niece.
I will let you figure out which is which.

Thanks for posting your 2 samples. I think they are great and would like to have a go myself, so a few questions if you do not mind. Did you use 1" Acrylic Plexiglass as buck4 did or thinner? Looks about 8mm,and what exactly was it?
Were your designs V carved and if so to what depth?

I have wondered how or where the lights were placed for the effect, and thanks to your photo of your base it has become clear. If you do not mind providing the rest of the info I would love to try one and use your base design concept.

Hi Roger,

All of the perspex is 4.5mm (3/16) thick and were VCarved to a maximum depth of 2mm. I would probably use 6mm, (1/4") if I had it but I wouldn't go any thinner.

I have attached the VCP files for the base top and bottom as well as a PDF file for each which I use to remind me the setup of the files 6 months down the track when I want to make another.
